Morphologically
Abruzzo, set between the central Apennines and the Adriatic coast, can be divided into two areas: the western area is mountainous whereas in the eastern part the hills slope gently towards the sea. The particular lay of the land means it has a lot to offer tourists both in summer and in winter. In the winter the most popular skiing resorts are Rivisondoli, Roccaraso and Pescocostanzo; in the summer the most popular parts are Silvì Marina, Vasto, Ortona and many more.
A unique feature of this region is the
Abruzzo National Park, in the upper part of the Sangro valley. It is home to many animals such as a local variety of bear (‘orso marsicano’), wolves, chamois, roe deer and many more.
Abruzzi cuisine has benefited greatly from the recent popularity of Mediterranean cookery and there are many restaurants offering typical Mediterranean dishes.
