Emilia Romagna owes its name to the old via Aemilia, one of the great Roman roads, built to connect the towns of Placentia (Piacenza) and Ariminum (Rimini). In the past, most of the region was swamp land; all that remains today of those ancient swamps are some lakes and the valleys of Comacchio.
The region of Emilia Romagna is made up of two distinct areas: Emilia and Romagna.
Emilia is the north eastern part, with the cities of Bologna, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, Parma and Modena, whereas the cities of Romagna include Ferrara, Ravenna , Rimini and Forlì.
Summer bathing resorts, such as Rimini, Cattolica and Riccione, are extremely famous as are the thermal baths of Porretta Terme, Terme di Tabiano and Castrocaro Terme.
Emilia Romagna is famous all over the world for some of its food products, such as Parmesan cheese, Parma ham, Modena aromatic vinegar, tortellini, zampone and piadina (a type of bread).
