Liguria

Liguria is in the north-western part of Italy and its name has very ancient origins. It derives from the name of the region’s first inhabitants, who lived between the river Rodano and the river Arno. When Italy was divided in the Augustan age the IX Regio Liguria was much bigger than the current region because it included areas up to the River Po.
Tourism in Liguria is favoured by the beautiful countryside and by efficient tourist resorts. Favourite destinations for tourists are the famous Cinque Terre (‘five lands’) which are five sea towns (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore), the Riviera dei Fiori (‘coast of flowers’) and Portofino. The coast of Liguria is 300 kilometres long and is divided into Riviera di Levante and Riviera di Ponente (‘western and eastern coast’) whereas in the mountainous region there are the Maritime Alps.
