The morphological structure of
Lombardy is very simple: there are mountains to the north, with the Stelvio National Park; the mountains are replaced by the Pianura Padana in the south.
Lombardy is rich in rivers and lakes; the river Po and its major affluents flow through the southern part. Italy’s largest lakes (Lake Maggiore, Lake Garda, Lake Como and Lake Iseo) are in this region. Tourism is generally concentrated round the lakes and in the cities with old churches and halls, such as Milan, Mantua and Pavia. There are some important thermal baths in Lombardy: Sirmione, Salice Terme and Boario Terme. Lombardy’s mountain areas are fully equipped for winter sports lovers and the most popular destinations are Bormio, Livigno, Santa Aprica, Caterina Valfurba, Madesimo, Ponte di Legno and Passo del Tonale.
