Marche

The Marche region is between the Umbro-Marchigiano Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. Most of the region is mountainous or hilly but its coast stretches along the Adriatic for 180 kilometres. Tourism is a rapidly expanding industry in this region thanks to the bathing resorts of Pesaro, Senigallia, Porto San Giorgio and San Benedetto del Tronto. There are also cities with interesting historic and artistic sites such as Urbino, Macerata and Fermo.
The Duke s Palace of Urbino, the Spheristerion of Macerata, the Duomo of Ancona are well worth visiting. Italy’s biggest set of carsick caves is in this region: the Caves of Frasassi, in Genga, are open to the public with a 1.5 kilometre underground walk. Do not miss the opportunity to visit Recanati, the birthplace of the poet Giacomo Leopardi, and the Holy House of Loreto, the destination of many religious pilgrimages.
