Piedmont

Piedmont owes its name to being “at the foot of the mountains”; indeed, in some ancient maps, the name used was Pedemontis or Pedemontium. There are mountains and hills in this region, which is rich in water, with the River Po and Lake Maggiore, the second-biggest lake in Italy, on the border with Lombardy.
Piedmont is divided into eight provinces and Turin is the main city of the region. It is an important destination for winter sports lovers: Sestriere is on the hill between the Chisone Valley and the Susa Valley and is one of those most modern skiing resorts in Italy.
To those not interested in skiing Piedmont offers unspoilt natural environments, valleys and towns, each with its history, art, culture and its own special dishes.

Provinces: Torino, Alessandria, Asti, Biella, Cuneo, Novara, Verbania, Vercelli.
