Sicily is the biggest island in Italy and also the biggest island region.
The archipelagos of the Aeolian Islands, Egadi, Pelagie islands are part of Sicily as are the islands of Pantelleria and Ustica.
The plain of Catania is dominated by
Mount Etna, the most active volcano in Europe.
Sicily was colonised by Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans and each of these peoples left their mark on the land in one way or another: the Valley of Temples near Agrigento, the splendid mosaics of the Duomo di Monreale or the Pantalica necropolis are but a few examples.
There is no doubt that one of the most popular destinations for tourists in Sicily is Taormina, but along the coast of Sicily there are plenty of other splendid towns, such as Acitrezza, Aci Castello and Aci Catena. The Gorges of Alcantara and the Naxos Gardens are definitely worth visiting.
